Science Club Report on National Statistics Day 2025
The Science Club of St. Peter's Training College, Kolenchery, in association with MRSV Higher Secondary School, Mazhuvannoor, successfully organized an awareness session on the occasion of National Statistics Day 2025, held on June 29, 2025. The theme of the event was “Statistics: Unlocking the Power of Numbers”, aimed at educating students about the significance of statistics in daily life and decision-making processes.
National Statistics Day is celebrated in India every year to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary statistician, Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, known as the father of Indian statistics. His contributions to economic planning, statistical research, and large-scale surveys are invaluable, and this day serves to remind us of the relevance of statistics in building a data-driven society.
The program commenced at 1:30 PM with an introductory session led by the Science Club members, where the importance of statistics as a fundamental tool for scientific research, policymaking, and development was discussed. Students were introduced to the role of statistics in various fields such as health, education, business, and environmental studies.
A specially designed PowerPoint presentation was showcased, highlighting real-life examples of how statistical data influences government decisions, disaster management, public health strategies, and economic growth. The presentation visually demonstrated how numbers, when interpreted correctly, can help unlock hidden patterns and predict future trends.
The resource person for the day was Mr. Akhil Thomas, a student-teacher from St. Peter's Training College, who delivered an engaging talk simplifying the complex world of statistics for the young audience. He explained key statistical concepts like data collection, interpretation, analysis, and graphical representation using relatable examples from everyday life, such as sports statistics, weather forecasts, and educational assessments.
Mr. Akhil emphasized the growing relevance of statistics in the era of digital technology, artificial intelligence, and big data, encouraging students to develop analytical thinking and data literacy. He also discussed the role of statistics in national development, particularly in areas like population census, health surveys, and socio-economic planning.
An interactive Q&A session followed, where students eagerly participated, asking questions and sharing their observations about how data impacts their surroundings. The interactive approach helped demystify the subject and sparked curiosity among students to learn more about the practical applications of statistics.
The program concluded with the Science Club Coordinator expressing gratitude to the management of St. Peter's Training College and MRSV HS Mazhuvannoor for their collaboration and support in organizing the event. Special appreciation was given to the students for their active participation and enthusiasm.
The National Statistics Day observance was a resounding success, achieving its goal of making students aware of the vital role statistics play in shaping informed societies. The Science Club hopes that such initiatives will motivate students to appreciate the power of numbers and pursue statistical thinking in their academic and professional lives.
